Big Lake Youth Camp

Water was scarce so we took a side trail to Lava Camp. We got water from a lake then sat at a picnic table to have a late lunch. Bruce and his son were just packing out from a weekend hike and as we shared our PCT stories with them they shared their left over food. Just a mile down the road we ran into more trail magic at the highway. Water and Bucket (Appalachian Trail 2007 Thru-hikers) had set up trail magic. They treated us to hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, snacks and drinks. Even though we had just finished lunch a half hour ago we found room for their magic.

Thanks Water and Bucket for your above-and-beyond trail magic!
Just before we got in to Big Lake we passed another milestone...

We got into Big Lake at 730pm. The camp was working with a small staff and had put aside this week for maintenance. No campers until Thursday - our timing couldn't have been better.

Cindy , the cook, left a whole apple pie for the hikers coming in late. We scoffed up what was left, did our laundry, took our showers and found a great camping spot.
The Big Lake Youth Camp is in a beautiful setting with every camp activity you can imagine- see pics below...

The next day a ranger came into the youth camp to talk to the hikers about the Olallie Lake and Mt Jefferson detour due to the Waterfall 2 Fire. The detour has been extended due to the wind changing direction. The detour would add 38 miles to our already 107 mile leg to Timberline Lodge--not good news. We took pictures of the maps and calculated how much more food we would need.

Thank goodness for the hiker box. We found plenty of food to supplement. Fellow hikers arrived including Ooops and Bill so we shared the information with them. Before you know it dinner was being served. We bellied-up and set out on the trail but only made it 2 miles before it was nearly dark and we had to stop for the night. The days are getting shorter and we are really noticing that now. We set are alarm for 5am so we could get an earlier start tomorrow.
