After a great breakfast at Fish Lake Jim gave Gone Fishing, Sweep and I a ride to the trailhead at 11am. We hiked 18 miles before dark over easy tread and met several other PCT hikers; Derrick, Maple, Colors, and Quirk to name a few. Water was scarce so minimal mosquito problems until dusk. The next morning we hiked more difficult terrain and passed another milestone.
1800 miles
We met more new hikers; Will Way, Shutter bug 2, and Cougar.
Water was scarce again and we walked 1.5 miles off trail to the only water available - about 3 gallons of muddy water from a deep hole in the ground. Not the best but at least we got water to last us until Mazama Village.
The terrain as we approached our target was mostly lava rock and a long area of burned forest so not much in the way of good scenery to put on the blog.
We reached Mazama Village early Friday afternoon to find the campground full and a lot of vacationeers everywhere. The stop at the store and cafe was enough to recharge us but we were disappointed to learn the cafe had done away with the all-you-can-eat buffet. We were happy to see they still had a salad bar.
We spent most of today sorting our resupply and trying to reduce our pack weight. This next section we have a 26 mile dry stretch. This requires hikers to carry about 10lbs of water:(
You would think this late in the game I would have all of this figured out but it seems to be ever-changing. I had some winter items sent expecting colder temperatures and snow but have seen neither so sent them back.
I think I have spent more on postage than on food.
Tomorrow we will hike the Crater Lake Rim and should have some great pics for you!
