We reached Drakesbad, mile 1354 before the buffet was closed!
You have no idea what extremes a thru- hiker will go to for food. There's a joke on the trail that goes like this-
How can you tell the difference between a day-hiker, a section-hiker and a Thru-hiker? A day hiker will step over an M&M on the trail, a section hiker will pick it up and eat it and a Thru-hiker will pick it up, eat it and dig for more:)
Drakesbad is a pricey resort in the middle of nowhere with great food and great service for PCT hikers. They charge hikers less than half the going rate for meals, wash our laundry for no charge and allow us free use of the showers and hot springs swimming pool. They accept hiker boxes and even agreed to mail off a box for me at no extra charge.
Our first look was into the hiker box where Gone Fishing found a hat to replace his tattered one. As usual the trail provides.
Nice Hat and the price was right too!
The campground is just a half mile away and $14 for a site which can accommodate several hikers. We met up with Clay, Rubs, Waldo, Hono, and Running Wolf. A great hiker friendly place not to be missed.
We headed back on the trail the next day around 4pm after meeting Anne and Jeff who shared their watermelon with us and offered to help out when we reach Mt Shasta.
Thanks Anne and Jeff
