1512- 1555
We left the flat lower north slopes of the Kettlebelly Ridge and entered the Castle Craig Wilderness with many fabulous views of the Crags before entering the shaded area forest of Knobcone Pines, Douglas Firs, incense-cedars and Manzinitas.
Temperatures were too warm, but the trail tread inviting as we climbed a continuous 2500' ascent taking us to crest and a well deserved lunch break.
Leaving Castle Craig's We entered the Klamath Mountains, a collection of smaller mountain ranges some of which include the Trinity Alps, and the Scott, Salmon, Marble, and Siski mountains.
We passed numerous lakes and took a brief detour to Deadfall Lakes where we discovered several fisherman campsites alongside the trout stocked lake. The campsites were littered with the usual gear and fishing poles but aside from one grandpa leaving camp with grandson and trout in tow, campers were no where to be found. It took a tremendous amount of discipline on Gone Fishing's part to keep from borrowing a fishing rod. We had lunch by the lakeside camps hoping someone would return so Steve could get his fishing fix but it was not to be and we left an hour later fish-less and vowing to buy a travel rod in Etna.
We passed several day hikers as we continued toward the park creek trail head and parking lot but only saw one thru-hiker, Ninja-Tortoise, who has hiked the PCT in the past and is doing a section hike this year.
We found a beautiful campsite watched the sunset and the stars appear on yet another clear cool perfect night on the PCT.
