We had breakfast at Jenny's Cafe' in Independence and the owners father Bruce was kind enough to offer us a ride to the trailhead at Onion Valley. Steve Fitch, a hiker I met in Agua Dulce, joined us for breakfast and he, I and Ooops were on the trail by 9am.
Thanks Bruce!
Ooops, Steve and I hiked up and over Kersarge Pass again and once we hooked back into the PCT we made the long hard climb to Glen Pass.
The PCT crosses
8 named passes above 11,000' and this was our second one. It was much more difficult than Forester Pass. Here are some picks from the top of the pass.
Glen Pass
You can see a hiker crossing the pass above. It was very steep and we all wore our spikes and used our ice axes.
The hard part was descending. The snow had softened and unfortunately there was plenty of it on the back side of the mountain. We post holed down until Ooops fell into a deep drift. Post-holing is exhausting and dangerous because you don't know where or how deep you may sink. Ooops was leading and post-holed down to his pack. It took a while to get him out. After that Steve and I decided to glissade down (slide down on our butts). It was fun and because it wasn't very steep we could control our speed pretty well. Tomorrow it is on to Pinchot Pass. A relatively easy pass but a very long steep climb to reach it. We all camped together in a great spot at mile 794.
